As in most photo shoots, there are many shots that just can’t fit onto the pages of a catalog or magazine. When Studio Marcus Hay, Inc joined Williams Sonoma in Fishkill Farm for Open Kitchen we shot for 3 days solid and straight days, come rain or shine. We even spent the first day shooting product shots under the only outdoor covered area, which was the verandah leading off the farm store during heavy rain, needless to say we all returned to the hotel that night fulfilled but a little damper.

The great thing about being on an outdoor photo shoot is that it is always an adventure and while you work hard often creating environments in the middle of nowhere, you always have mother nature to help you along as a backdrop, but as we all know mother nature is unpredictable and at times a little wild so you do have to be sensible and at times deal with unruly situations. I can only imagine what it is like working on a farm, dealing with these elements, your day determined by the weather as a start.

Dodging sunburn, ticks and other critters is part and parcel and stylists that turn up in high heals looking for the glam world of photography ain't going to cut it on a farm and let me tell you I have had some of those Assistants in my day but thankfully I had a great robustly enthusiastic team, a big shout out to Quin, Andrea and Jill for being such troopers.

I grew up in the city but I would occasionally visit my second cousin’s farm in rural Australia and I often laugh at the memory of the wispy fringed blond kid in my Blondie T-Shirt being whisked around on the back of a motorbike over acres of muddy property clinging to the back of one my much tougher third cousin’s waist (who indecently were all from a family of girls) for dear life. I was scared to death but I still kind of loved it. For a city fellow, the farm still brings out an inner delight but I have to say a hot shower at the end of the day is what I crave for most of the day.

Thanks again to Fishkill Farm for being so accommodating and Thanks again to Williams Sonoma for the opportunity.

The Fishkill Farm story was photographed by the uber talented Mikkel Vang, Food Stylist Alison Attenborough also wove her magic, Also check out the video for the project we shot and extra pics including all the guests from the farm here at the Williams Sonoma Taste blog

At the beginning of June, Studio Marcus Hay joined the Williams Sonoma team at Fishkill Farm in Hopewell, Upstate NY to help produce a story for the Fall Catalog, styling an event to be photographed on the farm for the Open Kitchen line available at Williams Sonoma.

Fishkill Farms is a historic apple orchard that has been in the Morgenthau family for nearly 100 years. With the hard work and dedication of the team, Fishkill Farms has grown from a conventionally farmed apple orchard in need of new trees and new tractors, into a diversified, ecological farm with new orchards and infrastructures. Here are the additions to the farm in the past few years:15 acres of diverse vegetable plantings, pasture-raised hens, many acres of new fruit trees, farmer's markets nearby and in New York City, and a pick-your-own CSA. The mission of the farm has been to marry its historic identity as a family "u-pick" apple orchard, with the Fishkill Farms team's shared goals of diversification and environmental stewardship through sustainable farming methods.

It is a wonderfully inspiring place and the Fishkill Farm folk were a pleasure to work with the team. We spent a number of days there shooting a menu for a dinner that took place in one of the apple orchards.Studio Marcus Hay created a table setting for

Special thanks to our team members Jill Skoda and Andrea Greco who went above and beyond and stayed very late on the last night to pack up. It was wonderful to work with Photographer Mikkel Vang, It was a long time between drinks and of course Food Stylist Alison Attenborough and Art Director Scot Schy.

Many trips back and forth from NY to SF to LA and back NY helped produce this outdoor section for Williams Sonoma, Art Directed by Studio Marcus Hay earlier this year. Shooting in a studio in SF and in 3 different locations in LA and Malibu, Marcus worked once again with the wonderful Photographer Anson Smart and directed an amazing team including the very talented Props Stylists JC Garcia Lavin and Carin Scheve.

In the height of Winter in NY, Marcus was happy to escape the winter in NY and having just come back from an extended trip to Australia, the warmer weather continued with Marcus flying down to scout the locations based in La Canada and Pasadena in LA and Malibu.

After looking a number of locations, the three chosen consisted of an old LA 1920’s mansion and a more residential property that resembled The Hampton’s and an ocean surrounded property in Malibu with heavenly views. Channeling a touch of Hollywood Glam, Marcus’s favorite location was by far the Black and White themed property with a mini Versailles garden.

We were thrilled to make the cover after numerous cover tries and to be part of creating inspiring Summer images for Williams Sonoma Home Summer catalog.

For the Easter Program for Williams Sonoma, Studio Marcus Hay worked with 3 amazing teams. Shooting with both wonderful Photographers Anson Smart, Romulo Yanes and Anna Williams, Studio Marcus Hay Art Directed the entire Easter program from scratch. We produced a series of mood boards that captured the spirit of the season and the direction needed to execute the images. Working with the multi talented regular contributor Food Stylist Alison Attenborough and for the first time with the amazing Author and Prop Stylist Hilary Roberston and equally talented Christina Lane We set about a number of weeks in San Francisco shooting on a number of locations and studio.

Easter is a season that celebrates a pastel palette, for this Easter for Williams Sonoma we wanted a fresh almost watercolor approach, using a rainbow of pastel we created custom backgrounds that we used to produce the tighter shots and even created a custom made kitchen in the studio to shoot a pancake and waffle party scenario.

Here in this post we have included our mood boards that was presented to the team at Williams Sonoma before shooting and approved of the overall vision, these were also used as a guide to brief in and inspire the team.

We hope you enjoy the results and the Easter mood we captured.

Last year Studio Marcus Hay was approached to design a very special set for Williams Sonoma, It was to be a French Patisserie designed especially for the Holiday Season. Built in San Francisco ahead of time by the very clever Brett Bachtle. Studio Marcus Hay had team members on both coasts sourcing necessary elements needed for the set to come to life.

It was William Sonoma’s wishes that the set felt like an authentic European café that would house largely their Bundt cakes made from their seasonal and classic bundt pans (that are actually of Austrian origin) and cookies made from their seasonal cookie cutters.

The palette was to be mint, gray and white with a reclaimed pressed metal wall and open shelves. Brett helped design an amazing movable counter in mint with a white marble top that could be moved around on any part of the set.

The floor was painted in Harlequin squares and we sourced authentic tiles to feature in a custom-made shop window ledge. Working within a molded wall, the window was an older window sourced at a local salvage yard. We had designed by the graphics department a transfer sign that could be read on the window.

We had an amazing team and these shots were photographed by the wonderful Peden + Munk. The ever charming Philippa Brathwaite styled out our designed set and Food Stylist extraordinaire Alison Attenborough made all the cakes and helped prop out the set as a whole to make it look like an authentic space.

Of course like many sets that appear in film, only segments of it was ever seen but it helped create the scene for some amazing shots, here you can see it in it’s entirety.

Hope you enjoy seeing some of the behind the scenes pictures of this beautiful set.

For Williams Sonoma, Studio Marcus Hay has been very busy Art Directing and in some cases also Styling for the Holiday Catalogs and online imagery. Working with a number of wonderful Photographers including Christina Schmidhofer, Peden + Munk, Seth Smoot and Chris Court and also the amazing Prop Stylist Philippa Brathwaite we have been carving out the holidays in lots of spectacular ways.

Shooting in both cities, New York and San Francisco, It was great to be able to explore Hanukkah in the mix this year. Studio Marcus Hay designed a blue kitchen for these spreads that features above.

Look out in the coming months for more holiday imagery as we creep closer to those celebrations.
