Get The Look/ Studio Marcus Hay. Inc/ U Turn chair/ DWR

For the new look in our The Lab section at our website for our regular Get The Look we feature a shot from the latest DWR catlaog we styled. It is the U Turn Chair. Studio Marcus Hay, Inc styled the above shot for the U Turn chair designed by the famous Neils Bendtsen. Made in Italy in the softest Kalahari leather, we gave this beautiful chair a setting with a complimentary palette of caramels, soft greys and linens, a favourite combo at S.M.H. Using photographs and paintings inspired by nature, we also added the surprise punch of a modern petal clock designed by George Nelson and Grasshopper Floor Lamp by one of our favourite designers Greta Grossman.

Design Within Reach/ September Catalog

For the September edition of the Design With Reach catalog, Studio Marcus Hay, Inc joined the team once again to shoot a batch of new images in locations in Brooklyn, Manhattan and The Hampton’s. We love our DWR projects and we also pack in a lot of hard work but a lot of fun too!

This time around with this group of images we got to explore a lot more still life as well as large room settings and also a lot of new product for DWR including a brand new range of pillows and lot’s of great new rugs. We also got to explore some great classics in new fabrications such as a favorite, The Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen.

Again this season the palette was somewhat neutral and we were conscious to embrace this by working with many of the natural wood tones in the product and pairing them with crisp black and whites and hits of accent colors.

We also got to play around with some fun themes like the Architects office featured above.

We are really happy with above shots and hope you like them too.

DWR/ Studio Marcus Hay Interior scheme/ August Catalog

In the August Issue, Studio Marcus Hay was also delighted to be featured in an article within the pages of the Design Within Reach Catalog, It is such an honor to have my work for my Connecticut client featured in their pages. It was also so great to be quoted and interviewed, Thanks to the team at DWR for making it possible.

With a lovely layout and photo's by the wonderful Photographer Jim Bastardo, I have to also a big thanks to my wonderful Assistant on the job Molly Hartman who now owns an amazing design business Rye Workshop, Thanks Molly you are a shining star!

It was such a pleasure to be able to work with the team at Design Within Reach again a few months ago. We shot in a number of locations including a loft in Soho/ Manhattan, A Brooklyn townhouse and a large mid century inspired home in Montauk.

Shooting with the ever talented Jim Bastardo it was wonderful to embrace a clean palette often in some cases using very minimal color to achieve a monochromatic effect.

DWR/ A new angle

The great thing when working on shoot is sometimes you see the same shot from a totally different angle and all of a sudden it is reimagined. Often when working with the talented Photographer Jim Bastardo on the DWR Catalog's, we see a different viewpoint and with a little more time and a manoeuvre we can reposition the composition and propping slightly and this allows the possibility to capture a totally new shot.

The great thing about DWR is that all these shots get used and with as with the images above that Studio Marcus Hay styled in many great locations from Brooklyn to Arizona. In the latest DWR Catalog these shots appear for the first time as full pages and are given the opportunity to have their time.

Often too for us, It allows our props to shine in a new light, In our travels we pick up a lot of props for our shoots, If you look closely you can see a Fornasetti pencil holder picked up in Milan, A rare vintage Krenit bowl with oranges picked up in Berlin and memories of course cacti splinters caused by the planting of heavy cacti in pots and yes they hurt! ; )

Interior Project/ Edelman Residence/

Last year, The DWR team with the wonderful Photographer Jim Bastardo visited the Studio MarcusHay project for the Edelman’s in Connecticut and captured these amazing images of the 3 rooms we designed and fitted out for the family of 4. It was an exciting project that came to a close last year with great results and it was so great to be able to capture these images of the work completed.

We designed 3 rooms for the family were The Playroom, The Den and The Guest bedroom.

The Playroom was totally stripped and we started from scratch. We designed a totally new space and the contractors did an amazing job of interpreting our designs and especially with the playroom added a whole wall of new cabinetry and beautiful wall papered walls that really transformed the space. The Playroom became a space that allowed the family to come together to view TV and movies and play X-Box. John and Bonnie’s children Olivia and Oscar are growing up quick and we wanted to give them a space that reflected this, a space they could grow into, as they get older.

The Den took on a sleek sexy vibe with custom made pool table and all new light fittings. Embracing the leather tan tiled floor, we wove in some of their beautifully worn Eames and Saarinen leather covered pieces and created a space that included Bonnie’s collection of horns and knick knacks, also including a new sleek dart board.

The Guest Bedroom is a relaxing luxe space that we are all sure guests will now fight to stay in, we included all new light fittings, a new wardrobe system and we hung wallpaper from Eskayel, An amazing company from Brooklyn behind the bed.

DWR/ Reid Collection

Last year at Studio Marcus Hay we got to work on a project with DWR that introduced new configurations with the Reid Collection, A modular system that allows the customer to build a configuration that applies best to their lifestyle.

To help illustrate that Studio Marcus Hay actually came up with 6 different personalities that related to the different configurations. they are as follows:

1. Mid Century Fiend, This might be a young couple who love all the classics and a primary inspired coloured scheme
2. Wall Streeter, Think The Wolf on Wall Street or American Psycho, slick and stream lined with minimal color
3. Family Friendly, Games night in with the kids, bright and poppy
4. Hipster Dude, Likes a stiff cocktail and his music
5. Fashionista, Think Diane Von Furstenberg, she's a stylist and fashion blogger
6. Librarian aka Diane Keaton, soft, tans and natural peach glow

It was a lot of fun to create these different personalities and follow through shooting them both as stills and more (Keep posted) It was also great to work with the DWR team again and the amazing Photographer Jim Bastardo

Design With Reach/ Outdoor Look Book, 2014

With an extension of their Outdoor Furniture Program for 2014, Design Within Reach have produced a Look Book on Ready Mag available for view on their website. It is a new format for them and is fun to view as you can slide through the whole book in one go.

All of these images were produced in 2 separate Arizona trips that Studio Marcus Hay was asked to join where we styled both years, It is great to see this look book as many images shot here but not seen before are featured.

Again, All these images are shot by the mazing DWR regular Jim Bastardo.
