Top image: Coffee Culture: When in San Francisco, Studio Marcus Hay, Inc in the morning has to make a stop at The Mill on Divisadero for a much needed coffee and granola parfait. The bright hits of color in the the geometric graphic art against the crisp white subway tile feel clean and fresh. The space is flooded with Californian morning light and all seems at peace with the world in this wonderful place Middle image: Sunflower Burst: Sunflowers are a favorite at the studio and when we spotted this amazing arrangement of sunflowers and fennel flowers Outerlands in San Francisco set against a background of reclaimed wood, we were in love. We are loving the bright punch of the yellow and tangerine combined with the fresh spray of green grounded by Bisque tones of sun kissed wood Bottom image:Troppo Elements: Channelling the islands and getting into a paradise lost vibe, Studio Marcus Hay, Inc loves this palette of green and blue, most would know we are not shy of this combo. Paired with a hit neon ruby red, just a slither makes it even more exciting.

Material World

Photography: Kat Teutsch, Art Direction and Styling: Studio Marcus Hay, Inc

In a new section on our Color & Trend Forecasting we look at the value of materials in a shot and how this combination of chosen materials helps create the mood and feel of the image created. Almost dissected we have pulled out the key materials from one of our favorite Studio Marcus Hay images. This image shot by Photographer Kat Teutsch is from one of our New York Stories series and best reflects a clever use of materials such as feather, patinaed/ distressed wood, blue velvet and floral print. We will continue this series in the future so look out for them. It really is a fun way to look at the different uses of materials and the world they can create

We continue our series of Color & Trend Forecasting section at Studio Marcus Hay Finding inspiration in color combinations all around us, we use Instagram to capture the above images. Top image: It's still winter in the northern hemisphere but here at Studio Marcus Hay we are trying to be optimistic. Recently in LA where it is warmer, we shot this neon pink on a classic blue and white combo tile at a Hollywood mansion where we were lucky enough to be shooting at. The palette inspired us and echoed another bygone era. Middle image: A little razz ma razz happened in the Bergdorf Goodman holiday windows this year and Studio Marcus Hay was there to capture all it's neon glory. The high key colors really bounce off each other and really capture a celebration of bold color. The final image: For CB2's Spring Catalog, We created some geometric inspired artwork that complimented CB2's latest range of mint and pistachio vases, offset with a cool concrete grey.

We hope you are inspired by our latest series.

New to Studio Marcus Hay's website is a our Color & Trend Forecasting section. Using images unique to the studio, we highlight what's new in color combinations and what we see in all the places we visit on the course of our work or settings and still lives we have combined with hunted treasures and new acquisitions that help inspire us in our work. Some shots are even from our own personal projects.

It is amazing how when finding these scenes to photograph or combining objects how the colors can play off one another. At SMH we are big believers in combining unexpected colors together, this is where you get the most play and interest. Often it's in unexpected places you find these and our eyes are always peeled.

Running themes often occur also, we often see the returning of interest in certain trends, For instance with the impending embracing of Spring, In Europe recently bird motifs and florals have again made a big comeback. The clash of old and new is always interesting and many companies are running with traditional motifs in a new and vibrant way.

Pastels have been on the rise with a clever pop of color as an accent, added to give the edge needed to pull a powdery palette into a new age.

We hope you enjoy the new section as it grows in the future.

Photographer Kat Teutsch and I have continued our series with a new fictional lady of New York: Ophelia Sable Le Blanc, You can read more about her story below:

Ophelia Sable Le Blanc, Born May 12th, 1952
Ophelia grew up in affluent Chicago suburb of Oak Park, While she did not live in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright of whom designed many of the houses and buildings of more prominent folk, She always wished she had.

An Architectural buff, Ophelia had dreams of attending school for Architecture but somehow never managed to get there settling instead in New York where she was attracted to mood of the 1960’s where her jet black bob and big charcoaled eyes made an impression at the Fashion Magazines where she worked in the Art Department eventually building her way up to a Director position.

Partly retired now, Ophelia still dabbles in Design and holds classes at a prominent Design School for Graphic Design. She loves her coffee black and her cocktails strong, Her signature black bowler hat makes an appearance at times when the mood is upon her.

I wanted to go with a much more graphic stark quality with this lady, I always love the combo of classic black and white, but it always adds a twinkle of pizazz when gold is involved!

In our continuing series of narrative stories based and inspired by New York women, Photographer Kat Teutsch and I got together a couple of weekends ago and shot the next in our batch. This time Goldie Rose Smyth was born. These shoots are produced as a result of meeting or observing from afar the array of characters here, Constantly I am inspired by just a glimpse of someone on the street who you know has a long story to tell. New York is famous for it's eccentric personalities and thankfully the city is still full of them!

Here is Goldie Rose's story, It went like this:

Goldie Rose Smyth, born August 23rd 1946
Goldie Rose grew up in Sunnyvale, Texas, in the 1970’s she moved to Queens, NY, moving to Long Island City. Born and bred American, Goldie quickly got employed in Manhattan as a Secretary for a very busy Law Firm. She was had a solid chiseled kind of beauty and in her day her look was all cats eyes and larger than life brassy hair. A look she still keeps.

She’s not much of a traveler but has collected mementos from her vacations, largely spent in Florida or Mexico, Still Single, In her late 60’s now, Goldie Rose is largely retired but still pulls in a bit of Book Keeping from home from her old boss’s son, Gary. She usually sticks to an all fruit diet to keep her weight down but can’t resist feeding her leftover office addiction of donuts. Since 1979 Goldie Rose has smoked her first pipe, swapping her Menthols for her signature orange pipe. One thing not many people know is Goldie Rose is also a champion roller skater and still likes to skate in Central Park on Sundays when the weather is good.

It's really fun to get into the mind of an imaginary person, Maybe it's a bit eccentric of me? I do know however Kat and I get a kick out of having a narrative to work from and the possibilities are endless, Watch out for some more of our ladies!

Thanks to again Prop Workshop for helping us with the wonderful backgrounds  and some props at a generous discount.

NEW YORK STORIES/ Green and Blue Color Trend

Last Monday on Memorial Day, Photographer Kat Teutsch and I got together to work on a shoot we had long spoken about doing, not so much the subject matter to begin with but more that we wanted to create a story together. I met Kat at the opening of Prop Workshop, A great new Prop house in New York some months ago and we had been in contact since. Kat has a very playful light but graphic approach to her work and we both thought we would be a good fit. Over the months I began to loosely form an idea and I began to collect and gather props that seemed to fit.

I have for a long time wanted to a series of color based stories, Funny enough inspired by fictional characters, eccentric hybrids of personalities I know or admire from a distance in New York. The story you see here is a Blue/ Green Trend based story in essence but to give it a narrative or a thread to hang by while creating the images I had put into words a story that morning of the shoot and had written it down, It went like this:

Edna Indigo Greenleaf, born July 12th, 1923
Edna, born somewhere in the Mid West, In the 1960’s she moved to Manhattan, NY, moving to the West Village. Her heritage is vague but she does have some Scandinavian and Greek Heritage. A Professional but single, Her profession is also a little unknown, she is the spinster who lives next door, You know she has been in the building a long long time, but she keeps to herself. Her rent is stabilized. She may have worked in Academia.

Enter into her world and you know she is a travelled woman of whom has a love of Photography and Botanicals, She lives surrounded by treasures of the world, Artifacts from China and other exotic destinations travelled to in her youth when the East was still a mystical place. She loves to paint and while away the hours, A bit of a bower bird with eclectic tastes, She is also the older woman you see in the street with the bright blue bloomer pants and exotic beads, A woman of another era but who also likes to think she keeps up with the times, The New York Times, that is!

Sub consciously Edna is a hybrid of my current next door neighbor, Jazz singer Blossom Dearie who lived in the West Village and a lady I saw on the street years ago on the Upper East side who owned a parrot she kept on her shoulder. It may seem a bit odd to create such characters, but it really helped get into a spirit and mood for the shoot, It’s almost like creating a set for a character in a film. I also liked the idea of throwing out the window the old wives tail "Blue and green should need be seen" which is why exactly I chose those colors to work with.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy knowing about the process and enjoy the images from the shoot We had a lot of fun creating them, We plan to create more shoots based on color and colorful characters in the future, stay tuned!

Thanks to Prop Workshop for the wonderful backgrounds that I rented off them plus a handful of props, Most props seen here I actually own or collected especially for the shoot. Some may recognize it was shot in my apartment, as most self produced shoots are ; )
