For the December issue of Better Homes & Gardens, For the Style section that month, We shot professional blogger Heather Armstrong, of dooce.com Her blog was first launched as a place to write about pop culture, music, and her life as a single woman, but grew into something more as Heather married and had kids, She has made a name and a living by injecting her signature humor into mundane moments of her domestic life.
For the shoot Style Director Stephen Perfetto and I spoke about taking the shoot to a new place, Something graphic and simple. I have worked alongside the amazing paper artist Matthew Sporzynski at Real Simple for may years, He filled the pages of Real Simple with his interpretations of everything from cupcakes to campgrounds, You can check out his work in a gallery at realsimple.com/magazine-more/inside-magazine/paper-constructions, so when we discussed a big set that represented paper and a bow on a present, I naturally thought of him.
Setting up in the studio, for once my props were quite minimal, Matthew interpreted my sketch and created from scratch just using paper and tape to create a paper world in which Heather could be photographed. You can see from the behind the scenes shots the stages. Once again I got to work with the delightful Art Director Jessica Thomas, you can check her out on jessicathomasdesign.com
This story was shot by the wonderful Photographer David A Land, davidaland.com You can also see an outtake here that David included on his website that I have also included here as it is super cute!
